“Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow of Catholic Education”
Academic Conference and Roundtable Discussions

Contextualisation
Since the establishment of the Catholic Diocese of Macau in 1576 as the first diocese in the modern Far East, the city has served as an important base for Catholic missionary activity. Alongside its commitment to the Church’s educational mission, the Diocese has played a central role in shaping the development of local education. Today, Macau is home to 26 Catholic schools educating approximately 35% of the territory’s non-tertiary student population, continuing a long tradition of contributing to the formation of local talent.
Marking the 450th anniversary of the Diocese, this event provides an opportunity to reflect on the historical development of Catholic education in Macau while fostering closer exchange with educational institutions from other regions. It also seeks to inspire fresh thinking in response to an evolving educational landscape. Bringing together representatives from across the Catholic education sector, the conference will offer a platform for sharing institutional experience and professional insight, as well as for examining the challenges currently facing Catholic education. Through thematic presentations, participants will explore practical responses and exchange ideas, with particular attention to the opportunities and disruptions associated with advances in artificial intelligence. Ultimately, the event aims to support local school sponsoring bodies in strengthening educational leadership and governance.
The Diocesan Catholic Education Commission (Comissão Diocesana da Educação Católica, C.D.E.C) and the Teachers’ Professional Development Centre (TPDC) of University of Saint Joseph jointly organises an "Academic Conference for Leaders in Catholic Education" and "Roundtable for Hong Kong–Macau Catholic School Leaders" respectively on 15 and 16 May 2026. Both events will take the theme of "esterday, Today and Tomorrow of Catholic Education", with the former having guest scholars from neighbouring regions to share via their four keynote themes, and the latter having ten guest Principals from Catholic Schools in Hong Kong and Macau to discuss over five education related topics.
