“Theology of the Body” Training Programme for Religious Subject Teachers

Commences for this Academic Year

The “Theology of the Body” Training Programme for Religious Subject Teachers 2021-2022 has commenced on 25 October 2021. This Programme is jointly organised by the Macau Diocesan Commission for Life, Lifelong Learning Office of University of Saint Joseph, and the Diocesan Catholic Education Commission, and has the honour to have the Reverend Bishop D. Stephen Lee as the Lecturer, aiming to guide religious subject teachers from Diocesan Schools to learn about the Theology of the Body lectures and their values given by Pope Saint John Paul II during its eight-month course.

In the first lecture, the Reverend Bishop reminded that in this age of relativism, where the need to distinguish between good and evil has become increasingly invisible, Saint John Paul II's "Theology of the Body" lecture series is a response to the ambiguities in understanding the relationship between the body and sexuality, exploring how our bodies can reveal the plan of the Creator for the humanity, so as to understand the true meaning on being human. The Bishop also led the participants to realise the dualistic anthropology of human beings - possessing body and soul which reflects the goodness of the God; the Lecturer also proceeded to explain in details the three moral determinates of the human act, namely the object, the end (or intention), and the circumstances, allowing participants to reflect on how to make moral judgements about behaviour in real contexts.

The Reverend Bishop has covered a wide aspect of topics in the first lecture, and has introduced foundamentals of Ethics in comprehensible and interesting ways that result in in-depth understanding and reflection on making moral judgements. All of the 57 participants responded attentively in the class, bringing about an atmosphere of mutual inspiration. The lesson concluded with the anticipation that the participants can further ponder about the "body" in the plan of our Creator, and consequently they can contribute in creating an awareness of theology of the body in their respective schools.
