The Diocesan Catholic Education Commission (Comissão Diocesana da Educação Católica, C.D.E.C) held the “Orientation for New Teachers of Diocesan Schools” of the 2024/2025 School Year on the afternoon of 21 September 2024. This year’s event took place at the Fatima Centenary Auditorium in Colégio Diocesano de São José Sexta Escola (C.D.S.J. 6), with over 100 new teachers attending. These teachers recently joined one of the nine Diocesan Schools, including Colégio Diocesano de São José (C.D.S.J.), Colégio Diocesano de São José Quinto Edifício (C.D.S.J.5), Colégio Diocesano de São José Sexta Escola (C.D.S.J.6), English and Chinese Sections of Colégio de Santa Rosa de Lima (S.R.L.), Escola São Paulo (E.S.P.), Escola de Santa Teresa do Menino Jesus, Escola de Santa Madalena, and Escola Dom João Paulino (E.D.J.P.). The new teachers were first addressed by the Most Reverend Bishop Stephen Lee Bun-Sang, followed by a joint welcome from the Principals. Later, they attended two thematic talks delivered by Dr. Stephen Chan Teng-Fong, Office Director of the Diocesan Catholic Education Committee, and Dr. Francis Chan Nai-Kwok, Head of the Religious and Moral Education Section of the Catholic Education Office in Hong Kong. The event concluded with a blessing from the Bishop, providing encouragement and guidance for the new school year.
The orientation commenced as the Most Reverend Bishop Stephen Lee Bun-Sang warmly welcomed the new teachers, highlighting the important mission of being a Catholic school teacher. Quoting the Bible verse “I am the Way the Truth and the Life” (John 14:6), the Bishop emphasised that education is not just about imparting knowledge but also about teaching students how to love, build relationships, and courageously explore the beautiful world God has created. Bishop Lee also reminded the new teachers to care for themselves and their families while caring for their students. Additionally, he introduced the soon-to-be-released “Core Values of Catholic Schools in Macao,” guided by the principles of “the Way, the Truth, and the Life,” and encouraged new teachers to actively learn and participate in implementing these values in their respective schools.

The following talk “Overview of Educational Development under the Diocese of Macau” provided a big picture of how the education services of Diocesan Institutions encompass pre-school stage (nursery), non-tertiary education stages (kindergarten, primary and secondary), and tertiary education levels (bachelor, master and doctorate degree programmes). Dr. Stephen Chan furthered his introduction by listing the histories and administrative structures of the Diocesan Schools as well as the Diocesan Catholic Education Committee. Major statistical figures concerning Diocesan and Catholic Schools were shown to illustrate the proportions of both as compared to the overall figures of all schools in the local non-tertiary education system. To lighten the atmosphere, Dr. Stephen Chan introduced an impromptu quiz to test the teachers' knowledge of his presentation, helping them better understand the Diocesan Schools. He then divided the new teachers into groups of three, where they shared their motivations for becoming teachers, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere that energised the auditorium.
The second speaker, Dr. Francis Chan Nai-Kwok, gave a presentation titled “Jesus the Teacher, Shepherd and Guide,” exploring how educators can follow the model of Jesus in their teaching. He highlighted that Jesus’ role was not only to evangelise but also to embody the importance of accompaniment and care, encouraging teachers to lead by example and walk alongside their students. Dr. Francis Chan elaborated on Jesus' five core teaching principles: taking responsibility, journeying with others, proclaiming, teaching through actions, and persistence. He reminded teachers that, like Jesus, they should not only impart knowledge but also influence and transform their students through their personal example, nurturing their students’ spiritual and moral development. He also provided examples of how teachers can navigate the diverse values and challenges present in modern society, guiding students to deeper life insights beyond academic knowledge.
After listening to the expectations of the principals as represented by the president of AUECDM, Mr. Jammy Wong Kin-Man, all new teachers solemnly recited the “Teacher's Oath” drawn from the Catholic Code of Canon Law and the Declaration on Christian Education, affirming their commitment to the mission and responsibility bestowed by the Church in their future work as educators..
The new teachers then received a blessing from the Most Reverend Bishop.
Following this, all participants walked onto the stage together for a group photograph to mark the end of the event.
After the event officially concluded, many teachers gathered in small groups according to their respective schools to take additional photos, creating a lively and warm atmosphere that reflected the spirit of unity and anticipation for future collaboration in the new academic year.
