Delegation from CDEC and Diocesan Schools Visits Hong Kong —
Advancing Co-operation and Exchange in Catholic Education
Building on the success of the "Macao-Hong Kong Diocesan Education Exchange Day" held in May this year and to establish a regular communication platform between the two Dioceses, the Diocesan Catholic Education Commission (CDEC) organised a delegation of 14 members, including its Commission members and Principals of Diocesan Schools, for a one-day visit to Hong Kong on Wednesday, 11 December 2024. The visit aimed to exchange practical experiences in promoting Catholic education, gain an in-depth understanding of the structure, roles, and responsibilities of the Hong Kong Catholic Education Office, and share recent developments in Catholic education in Macao, particularly the soon-to-be-launched "Core Values of Catholic Schools in Macao" and the Certificate Programme in Catholic Leadership in Education.
Upon arrival in Hong Kong, the delegation was warmly received by the Catholic Education Office and directed to visit the Catholic Mission School (CMS) on Rutter Lane in Central. Known as the "free international school," CMS is a full-time government-subsidised primary school offering English-medium instruction. With students hailing from over 44 countries and regions, many from non-Chinese-speaking families, the school provides a multicultural learning environment.
Rooted in the Catholic core values of "Faith, Hope, and Charity", CMS emphasises holistic development, integrating the International Baccalaureate (IB) framework to cultivate students' inquiry skills and global perspectives. The school also places great importance on positive education, nurturing students' character and values through thematic reading programs and theater-based learning. Notably, CMS assigns all new students to one of the four Houses represented by different colours and they shall remain in the same assigned House throughout the years. This House affiliation creates a community that spans across grades from Primary 1 to 6. During their time at the school, students engage in positive competition by earning points for their Houses through demonstrations of virtues and good deeds. Senior students also take on mentoring roles, guiding and supporting their younger peers in the House, forstering a sense of responsibility and leadership. During the visit, the delegation gained valuable insights from Principal Ms. Joyce Chung Oi Man, along with Ms. Lam, Ms. Wu, Mr. Wong and other members of her team, about the school's governance practices, educational approaches, and its mission to nurture "future servant leaders" who are equipped to contribute to society and support others.
The delegation then proceeded to the Hong Kong Cathedral for a tour and prayer session in which they recited the Angelus, seeking guidance and support of the Holy Spirit for their respective educational missions during the afternoon's exchange activities.
The highlight of the afternoon was the Education Exchange Meeting between the Macao and Hong Kong representatives. The meeting began with a guided tour of the new office building of the Catholic Education Office, followed by an introduction of the organisational structure and daily operations of their Office jointly delivered by Mr. Joseph Kung Kwong Pui, Episcopal Delegate for Education and Mr. Antony Ip Sing Piu, Project Consultant on Support for School-Based Management. And then Mr. Warren Chung Wai Leung, Assistant to the Episcopal Delegate on Support for School-Based Management detailed their strategies in the “2024-2027 Programme for IMC Operation Support and Managers Training Service Enhancements”, which focuses on 3 main areas: professional support service; school supervisors and IMC managers assignment and training; as well as IMC support services.
The Macao delegation, in turns, presented the upcoming "Core Values of Catholic Schools in Macao," inspired by the teachings of Jesus Christ as "the Way, the Truth, and the Life," along with the "Certificate Programme in Catholic Leadership in Education" scheduled for May to June 2025. The Macao representatives extended an invitation to the Hong Kong team to join the programme as instructors. During the concluding session, both sides shared the outcomes of the visit and discussed prospects for deepening collaboration, offering direction for advancing Catholic education.
The successful conclusion of this exchange signifies the growing co-operation between the Catholic education sectors in Macao and Hong Kong, laying a solid foundation for a closer and more dynamic partnership. The two parties have also agreed upon various activities to be held in the near future, namely two one-day workshops on “Emmaus Pedagogy" for religious subject teachers in primary and secondary schools of Macao as delivered by the Religious and Moral Education Section; a visit to Macao for Supervisors from Hong Kong Diocesan Schools to learn about school administration and policies; as well as another dedicated exchange session for designated members who support School Managing Boards in Hong Kong to share their experience and resources with supervisors, SMC members and Principals in Macao. The delegation expressed hope that through this invaluable opportunity for sharing and learning along with future activities, Catholic core values could be more broadly integrated into the educational practices of both regions, further promoting the holistic development of students.
