The 2024/2025 Theology of the Body Training Programme for Religious Subject Teachers, jointly organised by the Macau Diocesan Commission for Life, the Diocesan Catholic Education Commission, and the University of Saint Joseph, was successfully held from October 2024 to June 2025. The programme consisted of two levels: the Enhanced Initiation and the Core Programme. A total of 59 teachers from 16 Catholic schools completed the course, achieving notable progress in knowledge, faith formation, and practical application.

42 teachers were admitted to the Enhanced Initiation Programme, instructed solely by the Most Reverend Bishop Stephen Lee, centred on St. John Paul II’s Theology of the Body. The programme included theoretical teaching, ethical case analysis, and integrated discussion on textbooks and contemporary issues. Through group discussions and case studies, the programme helped teachers deepen their understanding of the body, sex, love and marriage, and guided them to reflect on how to integrate the values of faith into their teaching practices, laying a foundation for future promotion of the Theology of the Body in schools. In the closing session, the Bishop encouraged teachers to actively promote the Theology of the Body at different teaching levels. One participant shared how the programme deepened their understanding of God’s plan and vocation for men and women; another expressed how the course inspired them to embrace the mission of body-affirming education and share its message with students, helping them love themselves and respect others.

The Second Core Programme comprised 17 Diocesan school religious teachers who had completed all previous levels and now formed the “Core Curriculum Development Group.” Under the guidance of Bishop Lee, Dr. Francis Chan Nai-Kwok, and Dr. Peter Ho Man-Hong, participants developed curriculum units for primary and secondary levels with the Emmaus Pedagogy as a guiding framework. Through collaborative research, trial teaching, peer review, and revisions, they refined teaching materials that are both doctrinally grounded and practically adaptable. The lessons incorporated experiential activities and real-life contexts, helping students grasp the dignity of the body, the beauty of sex, and the truth of love. In addition to curriculum development, the programme also offered spiritual enrichment through the “Body-Spirit-Soul Rejuvenation Session” led by Sister Maria Zhu Zhi Bei Pu, and a pilgrimage retreat in May to foster interior renewal, deeper faith, and team unity.

In their concluding remarks, the Bishop and the lecturers emphasised that the promotion of the Theology of the Body should extend beyond religion classes and permeate the entire school environment. They advocated for interdisciplinary integration and encouraged teachers to adopt a holistic pedagogical approach that unites knowledge, emotion, will, and action—where teacher accompaniment and witness are key to helping students live out these values in daily life.
In today’s age of information overload and gender confusion, education in the Theology of the Body responds to young people’s deepest questions about the body and relationships. It helps them rediscover their God-given dignity and the value of being loved, nurturing sound moral judgement and authentic love. The organisers remain hopeful that through ongoing teacher formation and curriculum development, the Theology of the Body may take root and flourish in Catholic schools—guiding students to affirm the beauty of the body and sexuality, dispel misconceptions, and walk toward a life of love and truth.
