To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, the “Retracing the Footsteps of the East River Column” student exchange group held the Macau premiere of a short video highlights film. Mr Kong Chi Meng, Director of the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ), and Ms Leong Fong Man, a family member of martyr Cai Jun who was awarded a commemorative medal by the SAR Government, attended the ceremony.

The exchange group set out in mid-July, with more than 250 teachers and students from 28 schools visiting several cities across Guangdong Province, retracing the wartime paths of the East River Column. One participating student said that through the activities they were able to feel the cruelty of war, gaining a deeper appreciation of the spirit of resistance than from textbooks alone. Another student remarked that the experience made them realise how hard-won today’s peace is.

Dr Stephen Chan Teng-Fong, honorary adviser to the organising committee, noted that presenting history through short videos is a more effective way to help young people learn. The videos will later be broadcast across schools in Macau and on social media, and will also be translated into Portuguese and English for overseas distribution. Contact has already been made with schools in some Portuguese-speaking countries to provide them with the videos, with the aim of telling China’s story and Macao’s story to the world.

In his speech, Mr Kong Chi Meng stated that through a series of activities, including large-scale exhibitions and exchange visits, the government hopes to deepen students’ understanding of wartime history. He added that the authorities will continue to work with different sectors of society to create more vivid and engaging patriotic learning experiences for students, nurturing them to become responsible and committed young people of the new era.
