The “TPACK and ESD – A Sustainable Pathway for Teacher Professional Development” 2026 English Language Instruction Webinar, jointly organised by the Macau Doctoral Think Tank, Parahyangan Catholic University (Indonesia), the Diocesan Catholic Education Commission, and the University of Saint Joseph, was successfully held online on the morning of 6 February.
Centred on the dual themes of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), the webinar featured keynote addresses by leading experts in English language education from Macau and Indonesia. More than 200 scholars and educators from Mainland China, Macau, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam participated online to explore emerging trends in English language teaching, technological applications in education, and the pivotal role of education in advancing sustainable development.
Welcoming remarks were delivered by Mr Liu Baiqiu, Chairman of the Macau Doctoral Think Tank; Ms. Kristining Seva, Head of the English Education Department of Parahyangan Catholic University; Deputy Director of the Office of the Diocesan Catholic Education Commission; and Professor Isabel Tsiang Wan Man, Dean of the School of Education at the University of Saint Joseph.
Dr Iris Mak, Programme Coordinator of the Postgraduate Diploma in Education at the University of Saint Joseph and Research Fellow of the Macau Doctoral Think Tank, presented on “The Synergistic Pathway of TPACK and ESD”. Linking her analysis to the 2030 global education agenda, she examined the learning characteristics of Generation Z and their implications for instructional design. She further illustrated how the TPACK framework may be effectively integrated into subject content to promote the practical implementation of sustainable development principles in educational settings, offering frontline teachers concrete and actionable pedagogical strategies. Using Macau as a case study, she also highlighted how local higher and non-tertiary education institutions collaborate with community partners and non-governmental organisations to advance the Sustainable Development Goals, fostering coordinated development across society, the environment and the economy.
Dr A. Gumawang Jati, Associate Professor at Parahyangan Catholic University, provided an in-depth analysis of the implications and challenges of artificial intelligence in language education. Emphasising a human-centred approach to teaching, he underscored that technology should serve pedagogy rather than dominate it, and offered thoughtful reflections on the ethical concerns surrounding generative artificial intelligence in academic contexts.
This webinar not only injected fresh momentum into innovation and development in English language education across Southeast Asia, but also offered professional inspiration and practical guidance to educators navigating the rapidly evolving era of artificial intelligence. The collaboration with Indonesian higher education institutions successfully connected experts and young scholars across the region, establishing a cross-regional academic dialogue platform and fostering the exchange of diverse professional insights.
