Discernment: Come, follow me

Dear brethren,

Alleluia!

“Do not be afraid. Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me” (Matthew 28:10). Do not be afraid to witness Jesus’ death, for we will see His resurrection.

The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the most important celebration of the Catholic Church. He brings us salvation and new life, and reminds us that the call of Jesus Christ is to achieve His “plan of love”. Everyone, before meeting Christ and embracing the Christian faith, has been given the gift of life as a fundamental call (59^th World Day of Prayers for Vocation Message).

As the pandemic is over, the society of Macau broke the silence and is strengthening her ties with the world. The Catholic Diocese of Macau has also taken an active part in setting off with all sectors of the society. Therefore, it is also necessary for the diocese to rethink and discern pastoral plans and work that meet local needs.

Since last year, over a series of papal audiences, Pope Francis has given thought-provoking statements in regard to discernment: in order to learn to choose the best things for our lives, we need to be close to God first. The Pope shared that in life, and even in the search for faith, choice is our daily subject. Everyone is a creature of God and is given different talents and missions because "discernment presents itself as an exercise of intelligence, and also of skill and also of will, to seize the opportune moment: these are the conditions for making a good choice" (Papal Audience on 31^st August 2022).

The Bible teaches us that we always encounter different challenges in life, but we need to understand what is good for ourselves and for our relationship with God. There are various temptations in life. When we are guided by God and have received a vocation, then we are able to choose the best out of the many options. (ibid.)

“Discernment” will help us better understand the work of God in us and the meaning of vocation for us. We are all called by God to be the executors of the mission of the Church. (59th World Day of Prayers for Vocation Message) “In virtue of their baptism, all the members of the People of God have become missionary disciples (cf. Mt 28:19) All the baptised, whatever their position in the Church or their level of instruction in the faith, are agents of evangelisation” (Evangelii Gaudium, 120). God has invited us to work with all the members of the Church, especially with those chiefly tasked to implement plans in the Church. We do this in the same capacity as children of God to advance the Christian mission. The whole Church is a missionary community.

Through “discernment”, we are called to respond to God's gaze upon all of us. The dialogue between Jesus and the young man in the Gospel of Matthew involves the question of offering and the laying down of material wealth. The young man asked Jesus, “Teacher, what good must I do to gain eternal life?” (Mt 19:16). Jesus told him to obey the commandments, but the young man still felt that it was not enough and thus asked Him what was lacking. Jesus answered, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to (the) poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me” (Mt 19:21).

This is precisely what the Good Shepherd and vocation are about. Although the Church deals with secular affairs, she follows the example of Jesus the Good Shepherd, and constantly reminds her followers not to lose their enthusiasm for responding to their vocation. He asked the young man to give up his wealth and follow him. This requires the courage to: set aside one’s own aspirations and expectations, follow Christ's guidance, act according to His plan, and follow Him.

To this end, I declare that, from 30^th April 2023  (Good Shepherd/Vocations Sunday) to 8^th December 2024  (Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception),  the Diocese of Macau  will celebrate the “Diocesan Year of Vocations”. I hope that through the vigour of the diocese, in union with her priests, sisters, consecrated people, the laity, and community leaders, and through various forms of vocation formation and activities, young men and women are encouraged to respond generously to the call of God, and to lay a solid foundation for the future of the diocese. Activities for the Year of Vocations will be organised and announced in due time by the new members of the Diocesan Vocations Commission (appointment effective from 30^th April). 

Finally, I invite all of you to meditate with a tender heart upon the portrait of the resurrected Jesus Christ. He gently and unceasingly calls us to follow in His footsteps. Let us use the Word of God as the foundation to discern divine grace in this world and the next. I hope that the grace of the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ comes upon each of us. And do not be afraid, discern, and go follow Him.

Discernimento: Venham e sigam-me!

Caros irmãos e irmãs,

Aleluia!

«Não temais! Ide e dizei aos meus irmãos que sigam para a Galileia, lá eles me verão» (Mt., 28, 10). Não tenhais medo de testemunhar a morte de Jesus, pois veremos a Sua ressurreição.

A morte e ressurreição de Jesus Cristo é a celebração mais importante da religião católica, trazendo-nos a salvação e uma nova vida, recordando-nos que a vocação de Jesus Cristo é cumprir o Seu “plano de amor”. Cada pessoa, antes de encontrar Cristo e abraçar a fé cristã, recebeu o dom da vida como um apelo fundamental. (Mensagem para o 59.º Dia Mundial de Oração pelas Vocações).

Na sequência da epidemia, a comunidade de Macau rompeu o seu silêncio e reforçou os seus laços com o mundo. A Diocese de Macau está também activamente envolvida com todos os sectores da comunidade para também ela recomeçar. Por conseguinte, é também necessário que a Diocese repense e discerna sobre programas e trabalhos pastorais que satisfaçam as necessidades locais.

O que o Papa Francisco disse sobre o discernimento em uma série dos encontros semanais de quarta-feira com início no ano passado é digno da nossa consideração: para aprendermos a escolher o que é melhor para as nossas vidas, precisamos de uma relação íntima com Deus. O Papa partilhou que na vida, e mesmo na busca da fé, o acto de escolher é a nossa tarefa diária. Cada pessoa é uma criação de Deus, dotada de dons e vocação diferentes, porque “o discernimento apresenta-se como um exercício de inteligência, também de perícia e inclusive de vontade, para reconhecer o momento favorável: são estas as condições para fazer uma boa escolha” (Audiência Geral com o Papa, 31 de Agosto de 2022).

“O discernimento – como eu dizia – exige esforço. Segundo a Bíblia, não encontramos diante de nós, já embalada, a vida que devemos viver: não! Devemos decidi-la continuamente, de acordo com as realidades que se apresentam. Deus convida-nos a avaliar e a escolher: Criou-nos livres e quer que exerçamos a nossa liberdade. Por isso, discernir é difícil”. (Idem)

O “discernimento” ajuda-nos a compreender melhor a obra de Deus em nós e o que a nossa vocação significa para nós. Cada um de nós é chamado por Deus para ser portador da missão da Igreja. “Todos chamados a ser protagonistas da missão” (59.º Dia Mundial de Oração pelas Vocações). «Ide e fazei com que todos os povos da terra se tornem discípulos, baptizando-os em nome do Pai, e do Filho, e do Espírito Santo» (Mt., 28, 19). “Cada um dos baptizados, independentemente da própria função na Igreja e do grau de instrução da sua fé, é um sujeito activo de evangelização” (Exortacão Apostólica Evangelii gaudium). Deus convida-nos a realizar a nossa missão cristã juntamente com toda a Igreja, e especialmente com os principais executores da Igreja, também como parte do povo de Deus. Toda a Igreja é uma comunidade de evangelização.

Através do “discernimento” somos chamados a responder ao olhar de Deus sobre todos nós. O diálogo entre Jesus e o jovem no Evangelho de Mateus diz respeito à questão da doação e da deposição dos bens materiais. O jovem pergunta a Jesus: «“Mestre, que poderei fazer de bom para ganhar a vida eterna?”» (Mt., 19, 16). Jesus disse-lhe para respeitar os Mandamentos, mas o jovem sentiu que isso não era o suficiente e voltou a perguntou a Jesus o que faltava. Jesus então respondeu: «“Se queres ser perfeito, vai, vende os teus bens, dá o dinheiro aos pobres, e terás um tesouro no céu. Depois, vem e segue-me”» (Mt., 19, 21).

Esta é precisamente a preocupação do Bom Pastor no seu sacrifício pelas ovelhas e pela sua vocação. Enquanto a Igreja caminha nos “negócios” do mundo, seguei o exemplo de Jesus Bom Pastor, ao lembrar constantemente os fiéis para não deixarem esgotar o seu entusiasmo em responder à sua vocação. Jesus pede ao jovem que abandone a sua riqueza e o siga. Isto requer coragem para pôr de lado as suas próprias perseguições e expectativas, para seguir a orientação de Cristo, para agir de acordo com o Seu plano e para O seguir.

Para tal, proclamo para a Diocese Católica de Macau um “Ano Diocesano das Vocações”, a decorrer entre 30 de Abril de 2023 (Domingo das Vocações) e 8 de Dezembro de 2024 (Dia da Imaculada Conceição). É nossa esperança que, como Diocese, trabalhemos em conjunto com os padres, as irmãs, os religiosos, os leigos e com os líderes comunitários, para encorajar os jovens homens e mulheres a responderem generosamente ao apelo de Deus, através de várias formações e actividades vocacionais, e a assim lançar uma base sólida para o futuro da Diocese. As actividades relacionadas com o Ano das Vocações serão coordenadas pelos novos membros da Comissão Diocesana para as Vocações, a 30 de Abril, sendo uma actualização anunciada nessa ocasião.

Finalmente, convido-vos a meditar com um coração gentil sobre o retrato de Jesus Cristo na sua ressurreição. Ele, gentilmente e sem cessar, chama-nos a seguir os Seus passos, usando a Palavra de Deus, como a nossa fé, no discernimento do carisma deste mundo e da vida eterna. Que a graça do Senhor Jesus Cristo ressuscitado venha a cada um de nós, sem medo, para O compreender e seguir.
